PLUG N PLAY ATARI With 13 TV Games (2004 Edition) by Jakks Pacific. Atari Joystick This shows the Easter egg as it exists in the Atari Jakks Pacific port of the original Adventure game where the creator's name, Warren Robinett, was removed and replaced with 'TEXT?' This console was released in 2002.
Plug-and-play gaming device featuring classic games is nothing new, since Jakks Pacific has already found incredible success marketing Atari-branded joysticks and paddles, complete with libraries of games built into the device for the past couple of years. But for the first time since the namesake jumped out of the console market after the whole Jaguar debacle, Atari has returned to the world of gaming hardware with the. Atari promises a lot for the $45 device. 20 games from the company's past have been built into a miniature system that's been modeled after the classic 20 year old Atari 7800 console. The unit is surprisingly tiny, nearly half the size of the 7800. Of course, it lacks a cartridge slot, which definitely adds to the reduction of the system's footprint.
Unlike most plug-and-play units on the market, the Flashback unfortunately does not run on batteries -- it comes packaged with its own AC adapter, and while that remedies the glitchiness the battery-powered Plug and Play devices have when running low on juice, it definitely adds to the system clutter by requiring the unit to be plugged in to a wall jack or powerstrip. The joysticks, completely detachable from the unit, are also modeled after the dual-button 7800 sticks.but much smaller in size and easily more comfortable. The differences, other than size and addition of a Pause and Select button on the face, are minor: the cool silver Atari logo of the original sticks has been removed from the update and replaced with a much cheaper red Atari logo sticker. The tops of the sticks in the updated versions don't freefloat and rotate, either, but since this didn't add much to the original sticks it's not noticeable in the least.

In fact, they've been improved -- the engineer responsible for the redesigned sticks actually fixed a problem of the original sticks where the buttons would snap and break on the inside. I can't tell you how many times I've had to do surgery on my original 7800 controllers, and to see this problem remedied in the updates is a godsend. 20 built in games is a deal, and with the promise of classics like the 7800 version of Food Fight (a personal favorite of mine), the Flashback was high on my wishlist for the holiday. The box, bright and colorful, definitely does a lot to tickle the nostalgia bone engaging me to rip it open and start playing. But then, I turned on the system. The Atari Flashback looks like the original 7800. It has joysticks that are based on the controllers.
